Haemoglobin Electrophoresis and Sickle Cell testing
These are test that check for inherited conditions caused by abnormality of the haemoglobin molecule. These anaemias are more common in people from Mediterranean, Asian or African origin. If a woman is a carrier of the abnormal haemoglobin her husband has to be checked as well. If he proves to be a carrier as well then the fetus can be checked if it carries the condition by chorionic villus sampling or by amniocentesis.
