Low Birth Weight and Small for Gestational Age (SGA)
Low birth weight is defined as being under 2.5 kg {5lb8oz) at birth. Some babies grow slowly and are known as small for gestational age – SGA or growth restricted (intrauterine growth retardation – IUGR). Others develop normally but are born early and this is “prematurity”. Sometimes an SGA baby may also be born prematurely.
