Other Causes of Bleeding

Bleeding late in pregnancy may be a show, consisting of blood mixed with mucous, which can be a sign of pre-labour.

Blood clotting abnormalities. It is rare for the mothers clotting system to be affected; it sometimes occurs with a placental abruption or it may be the first sign of an underlying problem which predated the pregnancy. Blood tests are available to check clotting and families with a history of excessive bleeding may be screened before labour. A blood clotting disorder is treated by replacing the appropriate clotting factors.
