During pregnancy, if it is diagnosed incidentally, it may be treated with antibiotic tablets or vaginal cream and the mother is retested before labour. Antibiotics given during pregnancy may not eradicate Strep B therefore treatment in labour is preferable.
During labour intravenous antibiotic treatment is given every four hours to protect the baby from infection in the following cases:
- The mother is a known carrier of Strep B.
- When labour is premature.
- If the mother has a high temperature in labour.
- If the mother has had a baby with Strep B previously.
After the birth the baby is assessed and observed for signs of infection and then antibiotics are used.
