Haemoglobin and Haematocrit levels in the mother’s blood are checked early in pregnancy and again at the second and third trimester to detect low levels which may indicate anaemia. An excessive fall in Haemoglobin & Haematocrit can lead to tiredness and shortness of breath. The main cause for haemoglobin deficiency is a reduced intake of iron, vitamins and minerals. Haemoglobin deficiency may also be linked to inherited blood disorders thalassaemia and sickle cell disease.
