What are the possible complications after a laparoscopy?

The possible complications of a laparoscopy depend on whether it is performed for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Possible complications after a diagnostic laparoscopy are quite rare. Factors that increase the chances of complications are previous abdominal surgery or some pelvic adhesions. Possible complications include injury to a blood vessels or any pelvic organ such as the intestine or bladder. Serious complications after a diagnostic laparoscopy are estimated to range between 1-2 per 1000 laparoscopies.

Regarding laparoscopies that are performed for therapeutic reasons, the rate of complication evolves if someone adds to the possible complications of the laparoscopy the rate of complications as a result of the procedure that is performed. The frequency of these complications are still relatively small and depends, apart from the integrity of the surgical technique, to the presence of pelvic adhesions, endometriosis and the body weight of the woman.
