lf a woman has predisposing factors, she or the birth team will be more vigilant. Sometimes women feel the baby is growing or moving slowly. Antenatal examination of the mother’s abdomen combined with measuring the height of the uterus and estimating the amniotic fluid volume and baby’s weight will detect over 50% of small babies.
Ultrasound scans are useful to confirm or diagnose SGA and to assess the blood flow in the placenta and in the circulation of the baby. At the scan the amniotic fluid volume and the development of the brain, the body and the internal organs is checked.
